STUART HALL
Is a cultural and social theorist who has written extensively about race, class, and identity. He is widely regarded as one of the founders of the field now known as cultural studies. His early work at the Birmingham Center for Cultural Studies in the late 1950s, his prominent position as a critic and opponent of the Thatcherism in Great Britain during the 1980s, and his influence on the field of cultural and media studies have been widely influential. He is the author of Policing the Crisis: Mugging, the State, and the Law and Order (1978), and of New Times: The Changing Face of Politics in the 1990s (1991). He has recently been the subject of two anthologies: Stuart Hall: Critical Dialogues in Cultural Studies (David Morley and Kuan-Hsing Chen eds, 1996) and Without Guarantees: In Honor of Stuart Hall (Paul Gilroy, Lawrence Grossberg and Angela McRobbie eds, 2000). Stuart Hall was a Professor and Head of Sociology at the Open University.

Is a group of architects and artists women, created in 1994. The practice is in London.
<Extrait du site de muf : http://www.muf.co.uk the practice was formed in 1994 by architects Juliet Bidgood and Liza Fior and artist Katherine Clarke. Architect Cathy Hawley joined in 1994, artist Ashley McCormick in 1996 and architect Melanie Dodd in 1998. muf is a collaborative practice of art and architecture committed to working in the public realm on projects which embed enduring and quality interventions in the physical and social fabric of the environment. The practice has established an architectural notation which swells to absorb subject matter traditionally censored out of Architecture. >

MATRIX
fut un groupe de femmes architectes, actives des années 80 aux années 1990. Entretien réalisé avec Julia Dwyer (aujourdhui enseignante, et architecte indépendante) et Anne Thorne (aujourd'hui architecte indépendante).
Quelques réalisations de Matrix / some realizations of Matrix :
- "Jagonari Educational Resource Centre" (in Whitechapel road, London), centre for women providing educational, advice, social and creche facilities. (completed in 1987)
- "Dalston Children's Centre" : conversion of a public bath house to a children's centre.(1985)
- "Hackney Women's Centre" : conversion of a 3-story doctor's surgery, to provide cafe, meeting, creche, office... One of the first women's centres to be completed in London.(1985)
- "Grosvenor Terrace": (1988-90) social housing: 18 new build apartments for single homeless people (1988-91)
- "Jumoke Nursery "(Southwark Training Nursery) (1987-88) Conversion of factory into childrens' nursery and training centre.
- "Feasibility Studies and Technical Aid" (1985-1990) Matrix received funding from the state for providing free technical aid to womens' groups and groups which benefit women.Under this funding it carried out feasibility studies for over 20 different groups.
Matrix a publié deux ouvrages / published two publications:
'Building for Childcare": a guide to designing buildings for the Under Fives.
'A Job Designing Buildings': a leaflet giving advice to young women about jobs in Building Design.……….

DOINA PETRESCU
est architecte et chercheur au Centre d'Etudes Féminines de l'Université Paris VIII. Elle propose des "pédagogies transformatives" et des "programmes transversaux" dans différentes écoles d'art et d'architecture, en France, aux Etats-Unis et en Roumanie. Elle est co-fondatrice du RadeSING or REdeSIGN (alias Radical Design)"studio alternatif d'architecture" et organisatrice du colloque international "Altérités : Interdisciplinarité & Pratiques Féminines de l'espace" à l'école nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, le 4-5 juin 1999, auxquel ont pris part muf et Matrix.

artiste et enseignante au département d’arts visuels au City Literary Institute, Londres. Helen Scalway's current work is concerned with a nomansland - that of the city street. She is concerned with the representability of different experiences of urban space and wishes to incorporate the potential for participation by the audience, in an open, uncontrolling work operating as a set of suggestions, invitations and strategic porposals.(…)

JOHN JORDAN
John Jordan has spent many years trying to find a space where the imagination of art and the social engagement of politics could be brought together. He was a co - director of Platform, an art and social science group for 10 years (1986-96) and also worked on a social art project about
men and pornography. Now he works in the direct action movement, principally with Reclaim the Street and Peoples Global Action. He lives in
London and juggles his time between trying to creatively overthrow capitalism, looking after his son Jack and teaching Fine art at Sheffield
Hallam University.

JEAN CHRISTOPHE ROYOUX
depuis la fin des années 1980, historien et critique des arts contemporains, dont la recherche historique et théorique privilégie une approche trans-disciplinaire de ce qu'il appelle "les nouvelles modalités du récit dans les arts visuels". Cette recherche s'est notamment polarisée depuis quelques années sur le repérage et l'analyse de dispositifs définissant ce qu'il appelle le "cinéma d'exposition", à la jonction d'un double héritage, le cinéma expérimental américain et les "nouvelles vagues" européennes d'une part et les pratiques que l'on peut rassembler sous l'étiquette de "post-minimalistes" caractéristiques de la néo-avant-garde de l'après 1968 d'autre part.

JO SCHMEISER is a feminist artist and writer. She is co-editor of the magazine VOR DER INFORMATION (together with Gabriele Marth) and the artists' collective KLUB ZWEI (together with Simone Bader). Beside her political engagement against racism, (hetero)sexism and antisemitism more and more established and legitimized in Austria today, she is interested in further developing forms of collectivity in political, theoretical and cultural work.

Speaking about Godard, leading film theorist Kaja Silverman and filmmaker Harun Farocki have made one of the most significant
contributions to film studies in recent memory: a lively set of conversations about Godard and his major films, from Contempt to Passion. Combining the insights of a feminist film theorist with those of an avant-garde filmmaker, these eight dialogues–each representing a different period of Godard's film production, and together spanning his entire career–get at the very heart of his formal and theoretical innovations, teasing out, with probity and grace, the ways in which image and text inform one another throughout Godard's oeuvre. Indeed, the dialogic format here serves as the perfect means of capturing the rhythm of Godard's ongoing conversation with his own medium, in addition to shedding light on how a critic and a director of films respectively interpret his work. As it takes us through Godard's films in real time, Speaking about Godard conveys the sense that we are at the movies with Silverman and Farocki, and that we, as both student and participant, are the ultimate beneficiaries of the performance of this critique.

filmmaker and writer. Films include "The Empty Centre", "Germany and Identity", "Normalcy 1-6". Texts and essay films relating to questions of ethnicity, urbanism, visual culture, and the dialectics and power structures of cultural globalism. Is involved in the movement of feminist migrants and women of color in Germany. Currently developing Documentary Web Art, a combination between documentary film and written essay on internet.

RENEE GREEN
artiste, travaillant à New York. Renée Green's installations challenge cultural conventions, showing them to be possible but not inevitable consequences of their development. Green's concern is aboe all with the historical and social formation of cultural - including sexual and ethnic - identities. She reconstructs the history of the perception, investigation and definition of "the other", as in " Permitted", 1987, where she examines the penetrating (male) gaze at the historical figure of the "black Venus", or the repressed history of the slave trade in "Mise en Scène", 1991/92. Green is concerned with a critical questioning of the category of "the other" and its fucntion as a mirror, self-assurance and projection space for western cilivisation. (…)
