Nam June Paik, one of the major artists of the 20th century, began his artistic career in the 50s as a musician; his meeting with John Cage was of great influence on his creativity; founder of Fluxus, he is also a pioneer of video art. The 9th Biennial of Moving Images organises a retrospective of his video tapes, and some rare film recordings of his early musical performances. Other artists, like Laurie Anderson (also a film/video/cd-rom retrospective in the Biennial) seem to get better recognition in the art field, although her activity is primarily musical. The Biennial also introduces the movies of French film maker Philippe Garrel, pursuing its effort at screening the works of peculiar film makers (like Chantal Akerman, Philippe Grandrieux or Chris Marker in 1997 and 1999) in order to create links between artists from different fields. Philippe Garrel filmic works amount to 30 productions, among which ten have been chosen for this retrospective. His last movie, "Sauvage innocence" will be also showed.
