The collection started off in 1985, when Bill Viola offered "Anthem", his latest vidéo to the Département des arts et médias électroniques of Saint-Gervais Image, who had invited him to the 1st International Video Week (Semaine Internationale de Vidéo). This great gift became the starting point to make a collection of videos by artists.

Since then, the collection has been completed by following types of purchases: Complete retrospectives of certain artists invited to the International Video Weeks (Viola, Hill, Vasulkas, Cahen, Wegman, Filliou),
The restoration and puchase of the first swiss video artists (Bauermeister, Otth, Urban, Minkoff, Olesen) with the Fonds Municipal de Décoration
The prize winning tapes of the International Video Week competitions, the tapes produced by the artists in residence, aswell as punctual purchases, special editions, and loans by artists themselves, deposits from the Fonds Municipal de Décoration.

Today the collection contains about 1200 titles.
